Furniture Executives Voiced Opinions with Congress About Card Check Bill
Furniture manufacturers and retailers joined forces two weeks ago when they visited 13 Congress members to urge them to prioritize policies that will revive the furniture industry. Specifically, they talked to lawmakers about making policies that will reinvigorate lending and consumer purchases, as well as to reduce unnecessary laws that would increase costs or upset workplace relations.
One of the main goals of the group was to persuade Congress to disagree with the Employee Free Choice Act or the "Card Check Bill" which will remove employees' privileges for secret ballot voting and instead compel employers "to recognize a union once a majority of their workers sign cards for support".
"Our objective was to make it clear to lawmakers that we oppose any proposals such as this that would hinder the rights of our employees, our ability to maintain jobs, and the industry's ability to maintain economic competitiveness," says Bruce Bradburn, CEO of The Bradburn Co. and 2009 American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) chairman.
Bradburn was joined by nine other manufacturers and retailers from other companies including Ashley Furniture Industries, Furniture Brands International, Rowe Fine Furniture, Sauder Woodworking, Vaughan-Bassett, American Home Furniture Alliance, National Home Furnishings Association, and Bassett Furniture Industries.
Earlier this month, some members of the group tried to persuade legislators not to support two pricey provisions related to Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) benefits. The first one requires employers to provide COBRA coverage to 55-years old and above terminated employees until they reach age 65 or until they find another job that offers similar insurance. The other one requires the same amount of extension for terminated employees who have served in the company for 10 or more years.
"These provisions would place employers in the position of maintaining individuals in the insurance pool who are years removed from employment with the company, driving up insurance costs for current employees as well as for the employees," stated Bradburn.
The said provisions were eventually removed from the final stimulus bill after the meeting.
Last week, AHFA invited more than a dozen furniture executives in California to meet up with Sen. Kay Hagan. The Card Check Bill was one of the main topics discussed.
Bradburn said that with their multiple meetings with the new senator, there is no doubt that Sen. Hagan has been well exposed with the issues in the furniture industry. He furthered that the other lawmakers they visited have also expressed their support of the group's effort to keep the furniture industry strong.
Meanwhile, AHFA will continue its efforts for a better furniture industry at the BOR meeting on Capitol Hill on May 12-13 this year. Among their top goals would be to meet with important legislators in the country.

Powell Furniture Offers Themed Furniture Packages to Help Retailers Sell More
Powell Furniture recently developed six new furniture packages following its aim to help retailers sell more. The Color Story, Masterpiece, Door Busters, Recliner and Table Specials, Cedar Chests, and Jewelry Armoires and Vanities themes will be introduced at this week's Las Vegas Market at the World Market Center.
According to Tom Liddell, Powell's Senior Vice President for national sales, the said packages have been proven to meet the criteria for popularity, high retail impact, and potential impulse buying.
"We've done our homework to determine the best products, pricing, and merchandising formats that work in stores. It's really a template for a successful sell-through." Liddell said that the retailer just needs to pick out which of the packages they are interested in selling.
As a support for the retailers, Powell Company has included ready-made advertising slicks, extended billing terms, 3D floor layouts, presentation ideas, and a lot of sales support materials in the packages, including step-by step instructions on how to merchandise them.
Liddell said that their aim is to direct the customers' attention while in actual furniture stores.
"You want to give customers a compelling reason to spend time with individual items because research shows that the longer they are engaged, the more they are likely to buy."
Furniture stores interested in selling Powell furniture can sign up to Wholesale Furniture Brokers' exclusive Broker Base.

A Tree Bed
I checked in with Arch Update and saw this wonderful bed.
Have you ever wanted a tree house? Can you imagine sleeping in this bed? Every morning we awake with the sound of birds from our deck or in the trees around. We hear their cheeps and calls as the breeze gently moves the wind chime. This bed would complete the ambiance.
What if we left a window open. Would the mama and papa birds take up residence and fly into the bedroom, to feed those hungry chicks in the nest, while dropping bird doo... No, that wouldn't happen, but the bed sure might lead to some interesting dreams!

Have you ever wanted a tree house? Can you imagine sleeping in this bed? Every morning we awake with the sound of birds from our deck or in the trees around. We hear their cheeps and calls as the breeze gently moves the wind chime. This bed would complete the ambiance.
What if we left a window open. Would the mama and papa birds take up residence and fly into the bedroom, to feed those hungry chicks in the nest, while dropping bird doo... No, that wouldn't happen, but the bed sure might lead to some interesting dreams!

As you know we started a new feature to showcase interior designer projects and show the before and after pictures.
Diane Plesset is a bath-kitchen specialist, so virtually all of her projects reflect this specialty. From her website is this his Master Bathroom which won the 2006 Gold Award in the Master Design Competition.

Notice the lit display niche INSIDE the shower, the homeowners' favorite feature.
Do we really need the labels of "before" and "after"? What a beautiful makeover. It would be hard to get Mike out of that shower. He'd need a lot of hot water!

Tidal Pulls
I was co-contractor in our house built in the late '70s. I still remember the cabinets in the kitchen. They were white oak, which was the "in" accent wood at the time, in fact we had white oak through out the house. After the cabinets were hung, my job was to wipe everything with a kind of oil that brought out the grain and protected the wood. After the oil was applied, then you needed to vigorously wipe off the excess so it felt smooth not tacky. It left them the color of honey, as I recall.
Then we purchased pulls. Every door had to be drilled once for the pull and every drawer need two holes drilled. I thought I would never get done with the measuring and centering and drilling. In the house we are in now, there are no pulls on the kitchen cabinets. Mike and I just have never found the time or extra money for the job.
LinkedIn introduced me to Linda Thompson who started a company called Tidal Pulls that uses a brushed chrome strip for a pull and it's attached to the back of the door or drawer. I love the ease of installation and its clean appearance. Linda's asking for feedback. What do you think?
